Maine Unit Study Books and Resources

Maine Unit Study Books and Resources

While studying the 50 states it's always fun to dig a little deeper through literature and fun activities. Reading stories and learning more unique information rather than just your typical state bird and flower type of info can really help your knowledge of the state grow through literature-based learning.

Below are some resources for helping your state studies come to life. Hopefully through the interest of stories, the information will sink in deeper and leave a more lasting impression.

Maine Unit Study Books & Resources

Campfire Curriculum New England States

The Campfire Curriculum covers so much in your state studies. It includes geography, interesting facts, famous people who are from the state, STEAM activities, and so much more. We use this as the spine of our state studies and add on little things here and there where we want to dig a little deeper.

READ ALOUDS:

The Sign of the Beaver

If you're looking for a read-aloud about Maine, this is the perfect book for all ages from elementary to adult. It's about a boy who must survive in his family's newly built cabin in Maine while his father goes back to get the rest of the family.

Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy: A Newbery Honor Award Winner

This Newberry Honor Winner is a classic and would make another really wonderful read aloud option. Two unlikely friends discover the wonder of Maine's rocky coast. Historical fiction based on the true story of a community's destruction.

Keep the Lights Burning, Abbie

This is a wonderful history reader for kids. It tells the story of a girl who must keep the lighthouse working while her father is away.

This book is a graphic novel so it would be a good reader. My 6th grader loved it and gave it 5 stars. The first time he sat down to read it he said he was just going to read 15 minutes but he ended up voluntarily reading for more like 45 minutes! My second grader wasn't quite ready for it yet. I think a 2nd grader could most definitely read it, but I think mine was just tired that day and I didn't push it.

PICTURE BOOKS:

One Morning in Maine

This Caldecott Honor book is written by the legendary Robert McCloskey. As are all of his books, it's a classic. I'm a firm believer that even older kids can learn from picture books. This is a wonderful story about an eventful day in Maine.
